Facts of the Sea of Galilee, Israel

  • 14 miles long

  • 7 miles wide

  • 150 feet deep

  • almost 700 feet below sea level

  • Jordan River flows through

  • Fresh water

It is located near the Syro-African fault line, producing many hot mineral springs famous for thousands of years for their healing powers.  Being Israel's main water source, the somewhat tropical region supplies an abundant growing area for the country.

This location provided the place for much of Jesus' public ministry.  The lepers were healed (Matt. 8:1-14), demons cast out (Mark 5:1-21), parables taught (Luke 8:4-18), sermons preached (Matt. 5-7), storms calmed (Mark 4:35-41), multitudes fed (Mark 6:30-44; 8:1-9) and disciples called (Matt. 4: 19).

This painted view indicates the village of Magdala, home of Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2) and the Mt. of Arbel where Jewish rebels sought refuge in its caves from the Roman soldiers.  The original was a watercolor painting which brings out the fresh colors of the area as a fisherman casts his net into the water.
