Facts about Jericho:

  • Actually, three cities: Old Jericho, NT Jericho, and New Jericho
  • Claims the oldest continually inhabited city in world
  • Ruins date back to 7,500 BC; a neolithic tower dates back about 8,000 BC
  • 850 feet below sea level
  • Nearly 3,600 feet below Jerusalem, but only 17 miles away
  • An oasis in the Judean wilderness

It is called "the city of the palm trees" in two books of the Bible.  Mark Antony once gave the city to Cleopatra as a gift.  In New Testament times the traditional site of Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist is near Jericho.  The Mt. of Temptation lies close by where Jesus' temptations came following His baptism.  The immortal story of the good Samaritan is set on the narrow road between Jericho and Jerusalem.  Zacchaeus climbed the sycamore tree to see Jesus and had his life changed forever. (Luke 19:1-10)  But in Joshua 6:20 most remember Jericho in connection with Joshua...AND IT CAME ABOUT, WHEN THE PEOPLE HEARD THE SOUND OF THE TRUMPET, THAT THE PEOPLE SHOUTED WITH A GREAT SHOUT AND THE WALL FELL DOWN FLAT.....

The original painting was pastel.  Not far from the old city of Jericho, one will see this rugged scene looking back towards Jerusalem.  A young girl is resting her flock of sheep & goats in the shade on a hot day. Her burro keeps her company.  The earth tones of this lithograph go with any decor.
