Facts on Via Dolorosa

  • The pathway that Christ carried His cross to His crucifixion
  • Located in old city of Jerusalem
  • Means: way of sorrow or the way of the cross
  • Begins at the foot of Fortress Antonia
  • Ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher
  • City today is 12-16 ft. higher than in Jesus's day.

Geographically and idealogically the city of Jerusalem is divided into East and West by a natural feature, Tyropean Valley.  Today the city still remains divided politically and religiously.  The old city is separated into 4 sectors: Jewish, Moslem, Christian, and Armenian.  The Via Dolorosa cuts through several of these parts.  Along the way is the Ecco Homo Arch spanning the Via Dolorosa-the traditional spot where the Roman procurator, Pontius Pilate presented Jesus to the crowd and said "Behold the Man".  John 19:5

From an original pastel painting

From John 17 to 21, one gets a full view of the terrible price that Jesus Christ paid for our sins.   And that today He is alive and can give that breath of eternal life to all who ask Him.
The original painting was in pastel on colored bluish paper.  Using only a few lines and spots of interest, I placed in local people of interest and importance.  Ironically three (3) crosses are found on the domes of the church above.  This art print is a perennial favorite.
