Facts on Church of St. Peter
  • located in Jaffa or Joppa, one of the world's oldest cities

  • now a part of Tel Aviv, one of the world's newest cities

  • harbored on Mediterranean Sea

  • was originally a Philistine city until King David conquered it

  • Two churches by same name, this one a Roman Catholic commemorating the resurrection of Tabitha by Peter

The harbor of Jaffa, one of the oldest in the world became the chief seaport of ancient Israel.   The cedars of Lebanon were shipped through here to Solomon's Temple.  (II Chron. 2:16)  Napoleon and Richard, the Lion-Hearted both trod this ground.  Crusader fortifications were built here also.
Simon the tanner's house was near by where Peter received the vision of the unclean meat and the Gospel was shared here, for the first time, with the gentiles. (Acts 10: 5-6, 32)  Supposedly the place where Jonah was deposited by the whale.  It was the home of Tabitha or Dorcas who Peter raised from the dead. (Acts 9:36-43)

The original painting was pastel. The balmy clouds rising from the beach area behind help complete the personality of this painting.  With the horse-drawn wagon making a delivery from the nearby market, the palm trees and green foliage surround this beautiful church and make it a striking scene.  With the great history included, this art print is a keepsake.
